What's next for kitchen islands?

Everyone loves a kitchen island, viewed by many as the beating heart at the centre of our homes where daily life unfolds. It’s the multi-functional hub where all the action happens embracing cooking, baking, dining, homework and socialising. Blending style and functionality, it helps shape the dynamics of the entire room and, like all things, evolves in line with design trends and our changing lifestyles. Here’s our take on the next chapter for kitchen islands.

Curved shapes

Rectangular islands have been the go-to for many years, providing a linear and streamlined style in traditional and contemporary kitchens alike.

However, a new trend on the radar is for curves and fluid designs that will add visual interest to the space. This is linked to the interior design trend of layering colours, materials, textures and elements to provide characterful and personalised spaces.

Curves can also create a sense of openness by taking up less floor space. They allow you to move around them easily without any sharp corners to navigate – a plus in busy family homes or more compact spaces. And if rectangular is more your thing, you can always add a curved seating area to add visual interest.

Clear division of functions

While not entirely new, a popular approach in modern kitchen island design is creating a clear distinction between the working side – dedicated to food prep, cooking and cleaning up – and the social side for dining and entertaining. This separation ensures that the island remains a functional workspace while also offering a welcoming area for family and guests to convene.

Drop-down dining and built-in seating

Islands with integrated seating or drop-down tables are growing in popularity. These designs are ideal for casual dining, offering an informal yet stylish space for family meals and entertaining that puts the cook among the action.

Banquette style seating at the island provides an alternative to bar stools, creating a more comfortable and relaxed seating area. It gives the opportunity to layer colours and textures with interesting fabrics and cushions – a cocoon to cosy up in.

Go large

This is for those who have the space to make a big statement. But even if you don’t have space for the 6m long island as shown here, there is a trend towards islands being larger and more complete, in the sense of housing as many elements as possible to optimise functionality for storage, prep, cooking and clear up.

Functional design for optimal workflow

When it comes to functionality the design of your kitchen island can make a huge difference in how efficiently you use the space. To optimise workflow, it’s important to consider the placement of key elements and appliances like the sink, food preparation zone and hob. A linear flow, where prepping, cooking, serving up and washing-up flow smoothly from one task to the next helps create an efficient and ergonomic workspace.

Streamlined products

We’re all looking to streamline our home experience to make life easier and more enjoyable, from choosing tech-enhanced products for easy operation such as app controlled hoods, as well as products that really delight the eye with their sleek aesthetics while also being highly ergonomic. Here are a few ideas that work brilliantly on any kitchen island.

To maximise the efficiency of your kitchen island and make the space work harder, incorporate muti-functional products to help streamline everyday tasks. Consider incorporating a sink with built-in accessories, such as our Box Center range, which supports various food prep tasks such as washing, chopping and draining all in one space.

Franke Box Center kitchen sink with accessories Our versatile Box Center sink models feature an innovative multi-tasking design with integrated food preparation accessories.

Installing a hob with a built-in extractor, like our Mythos 2gether models, eliminates the need for an overhead hood. For example, our Mythos 2gether Icon Steel hob extractor sits flush with the worksurface for smooth workflow and easy cleaning. This not only improves the kitchen’s visual flow but also effectively removes cooking steam, odours and grease directly from the source, keeping your kitchen air fresh.
