When two become one: Why hob extractors are proving so popular

The importance of having efficient extraction in the kitchen is now common knowledge. And while island, ceiling and wall-mounted cooker hoods have traditionally kept the air in our homes clean and fresh, hob extractors are now topping a lot of appliance wish lists. Read on to find out why…

What is a hob extractor?

A hob extractor is an induction hob with a flush, built-in downdraft extractor. It provides the best of both worlds by combining two essential kitchen appliances into one efficient and streamlined package.

The hob extractor works in the same way as a standard induction hob - by using an electromagnetic field to heat your pots and pans to provide a safe and efficient cooking experience. However, unlike traditional overhead cooker hoods, which draw vapours upwards, a hob extractor gets to grips with grease and cooking odours quicker by sucking them downwards, straight from the pan. It means they are removed before they’ve had a chance to rise and spread throughout your kitchen, helping to keep the air cleaner and fresher.

At Franke, we have a versatile collection of 2gether hob extractors to choose from, with eight models across our Mythos, Maris and Smart ranges to suit all your cooking and extraction needs.

Environment Sleek and minimal, the Mythos 2Gether Icon Steel hob extractor combines a vertical grill with stainless steel accents and chic black glass for a premium, modern kitchen.

Sleek style

One of the many benefits of hob extractors has to be their sleek, minimalist design and their ability to bring style and sophistication to any kitchen. They are installed almost flush with the worksurface, for a discreet and streamlined solution, while their elegant black finish enhances their minimalistic beauty. It makes them a winning choice in a variety of interiors, from compact kitchens that might not have the space for an overhead cooker hood, to large, open-plan rooms where the kitchen integrates seamlessly with living and dining areas.

Environment The 70cm Smart 2Gether Black Lines hob extractor is ideal for compact spaces, featuring two flexi induction zones and a powerful 630m³/h extraction rate.

Design flexibility

As well as scoring top marks in the style stakes, hob extractors also provide more flexibility when it comes to the design of your kitchen. Not needing an overhead extractor fan really opens up your space and creates endless possibilities, providing room for decorative or pendant lights, which look stunning above an island, or more storage – think extra cabinets or open shelving.

For added flexibility, hob extractors are available in a variety of widths to fit different cabinet sizes and vented or re-circulatory mode, which means they really can go anywhere! If you are lucky enough to have room for a kitchen island, installing a hob extractor within it can create a sociable space that’s made for cooking and entertaining. Super flexible, they can also be placed on a worktop run if you’d prefer.

Environment The Maris 2gether Steel combines sleek design with robust performance, featuring a powerful 630 m³/h boost speed and red touch control sliders for intuitive cooking.

Elevated Efficency

As well as efficiently tackling food odours, steam and smoke before they have a chance to linger in your kitchen, hob extractors also offer cooking benefits too, with the induction hob providing precise temperature control and faster heating times. It makes for a more energy efficient appliance, which is good news for the planet and your utility bills! At Franke, you’ll find all our market-leading hob extractors are rated A+ or above, offering you enhanced energy efficiency alongside great performance and style.

Environment Franke’s latest 2gether hob extractors have a grille that provides easy access to the charcoal filters for cleaning and replacement.

Super easy to clean

Hob extractors are also typically very easy to clean and maintain. As well as wipe-clean surfaces, dishwasher-safe filters and waterproof technology, they often have heat-and-scratch resistant grids.

For an extra level of convenience, our four latest models, including the new Maris 2gether Steel hob extractor, have grilles that provide easy access to the two small charcoal filters, which can be easily removed and cleaned in the dishwasher. To dry them, simply pop them in the oven on a low setting or leave them stand on the worktop. Couldn’t be easier!
