Federal Home Products (FHP) has been producing and distributing kitchen sinks in the US market for over 35 years, mainly to large DIY chains like Lowe's and Mennards. This makes the Ruston/Louisiana-based company, formerly known as UNR Home Products, before being bought by Franke in 1996, one of the leading sink producers in the USA. To reinforce this excellent position in the market, Franke has decided on a complete renovation of the production plant, which was becoming obsolete. The first units rolled off new production lines this past September.

The double-bowl without drainboard, in the 33 in. x 22 in. (84 x 56cm) format, is a popular standard product in the USA, and therefore a very important part of FHP's stainless steel sink line. Previously, too many different production steps were required to make this product. Insufficient production efficiency and decreasing competitive ability made this situation no longer viable, which led to the construction of a new 2,800 m² press shop, fitted with state-of-the-art machinery. Two complete new production lines were set up: one based on One-Piece Technology, the other on a Multi-Piece Technology.

The first manufacturing process was engineered to require fewer steps in order to form the entire sink unit from one piece of sheet metal. The second process, using fewer production steps, allows the sink to be first manufactured in the form of individual components (bowls and frame), and then assembled, but by pressing rather than the usual welding. This process of assembly by pressing is known as "Vita Technology", a method developed and now patented worldwide by Franke.

All products are made from AISI 304 high-grade steel, but the main distinguishing feature in respect to comparable models in the US market is the folded edge with integrated mounting rails. This edge makes the sink units more stable, and provides more resistance to impacts, while at the same time offering more protection during handling and installation. The mounting brackets are also pre-fitted on the sink, to simplify the installation process, and then each sink is packaged for stacking. This last feature brings major savings in the logistics area – not just to FHP – but also more savings to the customer.
