On 14 January, the Franke Contract Group
Europe, in Bad Säckingen in Germany, commissioned its new modern logistics
center. The facility consists of a warehouse and office building and
covers an area of 1,600 m 2 . The principal highlight is the new,
automated small parts warehouse, which is a state-of-the art facility. |

Franke Contract Group Europe delivered its first machine spare parts
to its customers, thus establishing a major addition to its range
of services, which up to then had consisted mainly of manufactu-ring
and assembling industrial kitchens. Subsequently, interest grew rapidly
in finding a sales partner for small-wares and other consumables for
the whole of Europe, a strategy that was fully in keeping with the
Franke “one-stop shop” philosophy. The service was originally restricted
to Germany and neighboring markets, but the process of European integration
extended the range of opportunities: Germany, France, Switzerland
and Austria were soon joined by new markets in Western Europe such
as Spain, Portugal, Italy, Scandinavia, the Benelux countries and
the United Kingdom.
Today, spare parts and smallwares account for approxi-mately 20% of
sales for Contract Group Europe – and the trend is upwards. This continuous
growth in spare parts and smallwares business has made the expan-sion
and modernization of the infrastructure an urgent priority over the
last few years. The first stage, which consisted of a detailed site
analysis, clearly showed what an ideal geographical position Bad Säckingen
has as a central distribution center for Western Europe. It lies at
the heart of the European Economic Area, with 75% of the entire population
of Western Europe living within a radius of just 500 miles. All of
these people can be reached in less than 48 hours. The highway networks
in the border region where Germany, France and Switzerland come together
are only a few minutes away, and the airports at Basel and Zurich
and Frank-furt are all within striking distance too. This all adds
up to the perfect base for a highly efficient and competi-tive logistics
network. A further priority was to develop a solution which would
meet future requirements, the |

aim being not
just to considerably expand existing storage capacity for small parts
and new kitchens units, but also to smooth the way for further growth
at a later date. The solution that has now been adopted plans to modify
the storage infrastructure in stages. This will mean that output in
the final expansion stage can be increased to 1,000 orders per day.
In addition, it will be possible to expand storage capacity from the
current 5,000 items to over 7,000 items. There will be 60% extra capacity
for new kitchen units with storage space for a further 100 kitchens
per year. For members of

staff, the new building will put an end to the long-stan-ding problem
of having separate offices for Administra-tion/ Sales and Engineering/Warehousing.
The modern open-plan office will make operational procedures more
efficient and improve teamwork. In short, the Franke team now has
all the requirements of an excellent infrastructure which will allow
it to further intensify its cooperation with quick-service restaurants. |
