A ceramic disc cartridge is in reality two separate fire-hardened ceramic discs, a top one which moves and a fixed bottom one. The disc’s move against each other in a shearing motion, stopping water or allowing it to move through. The seal between the two discs is watertight due to the fact that they are polished so flat.

In the dezincification process zinc is removed from the stainless steel leaving behind a copper-rich structure that has very little strength.
